A Seasonal Home Maintenance Checklist for Raleigh Homeowners

Season-by-season home maintenance tasks for Raleigh, NC homes, from gutters and caulking to deck care and HVAC filters.

Fall: get ready for leaves and cooler nights

Raleigh's tree canopy is beautiful, but it fills gutters fast. Clean gutters and downspouts after the heaviest leaf drop so rain can drain away from your foundation.

Check caulk around windows and exterior doors. Cracked or missing caulk lets in drafts and moisture. Swap HVAC filters before you switch on the heat.

Winter: watch for drafts and pipes

Cold snaps are short in the Triangle but can still freeze exposed pipes. Insulate outdoor spigots and pipes in crawl spaces, and disconnect garden hoses.

Add weatherstripping to doors where you can feel air moving or see daylight.

Spring: pollen, decks and screens

After pollen season, wash siding, windows and screens. Repair torn screens before bug season.

Inspect your deck for loose boards, popped nails and soft spots, and plan to clean and reseal wood that no longer beads water.

Summer: humidity and storms

North Carolina humidity is hard on wood trim and doors. Look for peeling paint or swelling that can signal moisture damage.

Before storm season, trim branches near the roof and make sure gutters are firmly attached.
